Mavrovo National Park, established in 1949, is the largest of Macedonia's national parks, sprawling over approximately 287,448 acres. Located in the western part of the country, the park is a mosaic of towering peaks, alpine meadows, and dense forests. Dominated by Mount Korab, the highest peak in Macedonia, the park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including bears, wolves, and the rare Balkan lynx. Visitors can explore an intricate network of trails offering both leisurely strolls and challenging climbs. Mavrovo Lake, a man-made reservoir, is a central attraction and provides opportunities for fishing and paddle sports. The park also has historical significance, with remnants from ancient times interspersed throughout, such as old monasteries and churches. Year-round, Mavrovo is a favorite spot for snow sports enthusiasts due to its modern ski resorts.
